Treatment of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal, or gum, disease describes a series of events, beginning with lack of proper hygiene and plaque accumulation, leading to bad breath and inflamed, swollen, reddish gums that may bleed easily, and, if untreated, often ending in the destruction of bone and tissue.

There are a variety of treatments for gum disease depending on the stage of disease, response to earlier treatments, and overall health of the patient.  Treatments range from nonsurgical therapies that control bacterial growth, such as cleaning, scaling, and root planing, to surgerical procedures to restore supportive tissues.
